OBD-II Diagnostic Codes Explained (Simple & Clear Guide)

What is OBD-II?

OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics II) is a standardized system built into all cars and light trucks sold in the United States since 1996 (and in Europe since around 2001 as EOBD).

It allows the car’s computer systems (ECUs) to continuously monitor the engine, emissions control systems, transmission, and other key components. When something goes wrong, the system records a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) and usually turns on the Check Engine Light (CEL).

How OBD-II Diagnostic Codes Work

Each trouble code is a 5-character alphanumeric code that tells you exactly what the car’s computer has detected.

Code Structure:

Example: P0301

PositionLetter/DigitMeaning
1PCategory
20Type (Generic or Manufacturer-specific)
3-5301Specific fault

1. First Character – System Category

  • P = Powertrain (Engine, Transmission, Fuel, Ignition)
  • B = Body (Airbags, Climate Control, Lighting, etc.)
  • C = Chassis (Brakes, Steering, Suspension)
  • U = Network / Communication (CAN bus, modules not communicating)

2. Second Character – Code Type

  • 0 = Generic (SAE standard – same meaning on all cars)
  • 1 = Manufacturer-specific (e.g., Mercedes, BMW, Ford specific)

3. Last Three Digits – Specific Problem

These define the exact fault.

Common Code Examples

CodeMeaningCommon Causes
P0301Cylinder 1 Misfire DetectedSpark plug, coil, injector, low compression
P0171System Too Lean (Bank 1)Vacuum leak, MAF sensor, fuel pump
P0420Catalyst System Efficiency Below ThresholdFaulty catalytic converter, O2 sensors
P0442Evaporative Emission System Leak (small)Loose gas cap, cracked hose
P0700Transmission Control System MalfunctionOften comes with other transmission codes
U0100Lost Communication with ECM/PCMWiring, module failure, low battery

Most Important Things to Know

  • Not all codes are serious — Some are minor, others can cause limp mode or prevent the car from passing emissions.
  • Freeze Frame Data — When a code is stored, the ECU also saves a snapshot of engine conditions (RPM, temperature, speed, etc.) at the time of the fault.
  • Pending vs Confirmed Codes
    • Pending: Fault detected once (may go away)
    • Confirmed: Fault detected multiple times → Check Engine Light on

How to Read OBD-II Codes

You need an OBD-II Scanner (also called code reader):

  • Cheap basic readers (~£15–30) show codes only
  • Better scanners show live data, freeze frame, and can clear codes
  • Professional tools (used by us) can do full manufacturer-level diagnostics (especially on Mercedes)

We at Computer Assistance use advanced diagnostic equipment that goes beyond basic OBD-II — we can read live data, perform actuator tests, and do ECU programming on Mercedes and other vehicle
