Linux Systems Administrator

Brief

Work is varied as we support a wide range of technical systems. From Microsoft and Linux through to VMware, Azure and AWS, there is plenty of opportunities to develop a broad skill set and focus on new and interesting technologies.

Duties and Responsibilities

Day to day duties will include;
  • Maintenance of core systems and applications
  • Driving the automation that will support the DevOps team (including workflows and server build scripts)
  • Monitoring servers and logs
  • Backup and restore procedures
  • Software updates and patches
  • To provide technical support for client and server devices remotely and onsite.
  • Onsite visits to local clients to install and configure new infrastructure, as well as suffering outages, may be required.
  • Critically evaluating our client’s systems to ensure that the latest security and best practices are maintained is critical.
  • To provide help and guidance to your colleagues. We all work closely to share information and support each other in our endeavours.

Selection criteria

You must have 5 + years of Linux experience.

  • A strong troubleshooting ability; being able to comprehensively break down problems into clear, manageable tasks is key.
  • Enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and working as part of a close-knit team.
  • An ability to sometimes work relatively independently within our busy IT team.
  • Excellent communication and explanation skills with the ability to engage with varied customers on telephone and on-site. Being able to speak on the customers level is important.
  • An enthusiasm to step outside of comfort zones and attempt work on new, cutting-edge systems is sought after.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, networking fundamentals
  • Knowledge and experience in working with iptables firewalls and routing
  • Knowledge and experience in streaming technologies such as RTMP, RTSP, WebRTC
  • Bash scripting and/or automation experience + another scripting language (preferable python)
  • Google cloud, AWS or Azure experience
  • Experience working / setting up common servers (nginx / haproxy / apache / docker / consul)
  • Teamwork – experience with working remotely.

Desirable selection criteria

  • Previous experience working in a similar role
  • Linux proficiency is a must.

  • To be considered suitable however you will need to have the following skills:
    • Strong Linux background (including Debian)
    • SSH, bash / sh
    • Git
    • Linux web servers

  • Virtualisation
  • Hyper-V, VMWare, Backup technologies and Server hardware maintenance.
  • Office365 understanding is a plus but not a must.

2nd Line and Onsite IT Support Engineer

The successful candidate will join us on a full time, permanent basis and will receive a competitive salary of £23,000 to £32,500 per annum depending on experience.

  • Candidate owning a car is preferred but not essential. This role requires a mix of office-based remote support and on-site support for prescheduled or emergency visits.  

In this role as an IT Support Engineer, you will be helping both private and business customers with IT technical issues. Some of the duties involve:

  • Receiving and responding to problems from customers via email, phone and chat.
  • Identifying, researching, and resolving customer issues using available resources.
  • Following-up on customer problems not immediately resolved
  • Recommend solutions to fulfill requirements and solve problems
  • Providing support to junior IT engineers
  • Schedule is Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm

Personal Skills:

  • Excellent telephone manner & communication skills are essential
  • Ability to be calm when under pressure
  • Confident in problem solving skills and be eager to learn
